Often students know little about how their work is evaluated and see assessment as something done by the teacher. Electronic portfolios gives students ownership to "tell their story. It motivates students to be actively engaged in the selection and expression of their achievements. Students feel a sense of control and it helps them to understand their own learning. Rubrics allow students to reconsider or resubmit their work on the basis of the criteria. Students can apply what they learned into new contexts because the process encourages deep thinking about active engagement.
Adding hypertext links, video, and audio are a great enhance the portfolio. If every teacher at school began an electronic portfolio with their students, students could have a collection of their K-8 experience at their fingertips. Student motivation would skyrocket in the pride of their work.

I agree, student portfolios would help the student learn more about what they are being evaluated on. The students would help choose the material that would go in the portfolio, therefor trying to improve the piece to the best of their abilities. This process can only help make them better learners.
My teacher friends call me the "Rubric Queen", because I have a specific rubric for every assessment I create. I think it is such an important step to show the students how they are going to be evaluated, so they in turn know what is expected and how they will be evaluated before they submit their assignment. The more the students are involved in their learning, hopefully the more engaged and motivated they will be about learning in new ways.
I really like the way a portfolio shows growth. I do think it is important students have a visual way to see their growth. however they are a lot of work. I also agree with Amanda rubrics are important. They give students a clear idea of how to receive a passing grade. What i like about rubrics if a student gives them self a low grade we talk about why they think it is so low then i give them a chance to re due for a higher grade. if they choose to not improve it is on them.
I am going to start something new this year with my homework packets. Letter after letter went home last year about how the parents should help their child complete their homework and it was never listened to. This year all homework is going home with the rubric written right on the first page so they know what their child will be graded on.
Little baby steps for Kinder!
